MIA to be MIA on European Tour

09_mialng_lg.jpg

At the end of her recent US Tour, MIA declared that she was canceling her upcoming jaunt around Europe without really letting her some important people know according to this article in New York Magazine. She states that physically she need to stop for a second, but goes on to explain how it has emotionally drained her as well. The singer also seems to be slightly disillusioned with the spotlight, citing that she doesn’t “want to be the thing,” and saying that “Music is about the people. It’s a party.” She also says she’s been writing on tour and plans to release a new album. No date set yet. She’s just writing, and plans to take the time off from touring to maybe put something together.

Vans Gets Boxy

vans.jpg

Based on the upcoming Vault line and their foray into the fixed gear world, Vans started using one of their old marks–the boxy, very old-school looking, thin-lined one reminiscent of eighties skateboarding. The mark appears mostly (from what I gather) on the insole while sneaking its way outside for the heel. Personally, it makes the shoes seem a bit aggressive, I guess, and less laid back than the “Off the Wall” skateboard and boxed-in mark. Also, the Fall Vault line gets a little crazy this season after the Spring line kept it very very simple. Lots of colors and prints in this collection including collabos with Niagara and Moon. Check it all out right here.

Piecebook: The Secret Drawings of Graffiti Writers

51csagMupnL._SS500_.jpg

This one kind of slipped under a lot radars. Piecebook: The Secret Drawings of Graffiti Writers compiled by Sacha Jenkins and David Villorente features the work or artists such as Donid, T Kid, Iz the Wiz, Daze, Skeme and others and is laid out like a mass produced black book (which it basically is). The printed transfers the art incredible well to the point where it actually looks like it was drawn in by famous graffiti writers and not just purchased through Amazon. Also, 10.Deep will be having a gallery reception for the release of the book on June 12th (Thursday) which will feature prints from some of the artists in the book and a special package will be for sale that includes a copy of the book, a tee, and a sharpie.

IVSK8

As if purchasing Alien Workshop and Habitat wasn’t enough, Burton’s sub-brand footwear company Gravis recently launched a skateboarding line called IV Skateboarding and released their first shoe the Viking Hi LX Arto Saari. The sneaker (which looks an awful lot like a Supra!) was made with Arto’s input (who in a big surprise recently moved to Alien Workshop) and will be sold exclusively in skate shops (wow, i never would have guessed that). Products from Gravis IV (that number is still significantly less than the number of brand managers they’ve had) will roll out four times a year and they will continue to build up their team (wonder if Steve Aoki’s going to be a part of that team too) within the next few months. Maybe Gravis should focus more on surfing since global warming is going to cover the earth in water. Also, don’t know why they felt the need to make a separate brand almost for the skateboarding side of things. Maybe because both Nike and adidas have done it and you know Gravis is right up there with them.

My Drive Thru

cassantphar.jpg

Converse brought together Strokes front man Julian Casablancas, Santogold, and Pharrell to record a song called “My Drive Thru.” Let that sink in a little. Go on. I’ll wait. All finished? Yeah? Give it a little more. I have time. OK great. Now let’s talk. If you’re like me, you’re initial reaction was “Wow, that’s kind of cool.” Then after the novelty was gone, you realize that there’s no way this could ever ever ever work, and it doesn’t. While a good concept, it’s difficult to imagine anything about this track not being phoned in. You’ve got Pharrel going all Michael Jackson, the Strokes dude sounding awful without that effect on his voice, and Santo doing her thing (can’t say anything bad about her) in a practically unmemorable track. While a good hook could have spiced things up (and they had Pharrel. what happened there?), I’ve listened to this song twice already and don’t really remember it. It was made available today over at Converse. I guess you should listen for yourself.

Drinks Splashin’ and Cameras Flashin’

IMG_1135.jpg

So, the other night, I had the privilege to have some fine ladies take me to the Milk Gallery for Ricky Powell’s Illy Funksters. If you don’t know who he is, he’s one of the pioneering photographers who was lucky enough to catch hip-hop in its rawest period ever, not to mention being part of the movement to the present day.

More than a few people came to show love for this mans work. A good mix of people and cocktails were there leaving drinks splashing and cameras flashing. The meds I’m on kept me off the booze, but with some nice beats and some fine females, I was able to maintain. My govt. stimulus check didn’t stretch far enough to make a purchase, but maybe in the near future. The one piece I really wanted to cop was the Beasties/Run DMC tour van; shit was ill. I could just imagine the stories behind all the photos. The Jam Maser Jay ones had heads catching chills. The party ended with a dance party and an empty bar.

We tip our hats to you, Ricky Powell! Thanks for brining us the images through the years.
