TLA Should/Does Stand for To Live Again

Picture-1.jpg

Not to be confused with TLA (To Live Again), the widows/widowers activity group my grandmother belongs, the real TLA (Theatre of the Living Arts) lives again! Live Nation wised up, realized nobody was calling it the Fillmore at all and decided to say fuck it and give it the name Philly knows it by. Basically, it’s as if nothing changed because nothing ever did really change.

Check the Evidence

evidence.jpg

It seems the LA Times didn’t bother to check things out a little further. Turns out, after prolific LA graffiti writer Buket was arrested recently, the Times assumed that the person in the opening to his YouTube videos (hitting the 101 in broad daylight) was, in fact, the broad daylight bus-tagger. Instead, the pictures they ran were that of Evidence, one MC in the hip-hop group Dilated Peoples. Evidence merely provided the intro to the video, and somehow the Times ran with it as the mug of the alleged tagger. The online version of the article features a retraction, but I still want to see the original (someone in LA hook it up. Kove, we’re looking in your direction). How this mistake can be made is completely beyond me. What kind of idiot would feature his face in his face in graf videos, unless they’re a well known king like COPE2? And to defame the character of someone by assuming and running the wrong picture smacks of not so much lackadaisical reporting, but flat out failure to get it fucking right.

MIA to be MIA on European Tour

09_mialng_lg.jpg

At the end of her recent US Tour, MIA declared that she was canceling her upcoming jaunt around Europe without really letting her some important people know according to this article in New York Magazine. She states that physically she need to stop for a second, but goes on to explain how it has emotionally drained her as well. The singer also seems to be slightly disillusioned with the spotlight, citing that she doesn’t “want to be the thing,” and saying that “Music is about the people. It’s a party.” She also says she’s been writing on tour and plans to release a new album. No date set yet. She’s just writing, and plans to take the time off from touring to maybe put something together.

My Drive Thru

cassantphar.jpg

Converse brought together Strokes front man Julian Casablancas, Santogold, and Pharrell to record a song called “My Drive Thru.” Let that sink in a little. Go on. I’ll wait. All finished? Yeah? Give it a little more. I have time. OK great. Now let’s talk. If you’re like me, you’re initial reaction was “Wow, that’s kind of cool.” Then after the novelty was gone, you realize that there’s no way this could ever ever ever work, and it doesn’t. While a good concept, it’s difficult to imagine anything about this track not being phoned in. You’ve got Pharrel going all Michael Jackson, the Strokes dude sounding awful without that effect on his voice, and Santo doing her thing (can’t say anything bad about her) in a practically unmemorable track. While a good hook could have spiced things up (and they had Pharrel. what happened there?), I’ve listened to this song twice already and don’t really remember it. It was made available today over at Converse. I guess you should listen for yourself.

The In Crowd: Kidz in the Hall

kith-the-in-crowd-lp-cover-art.jpg

I didn’t really talk about the Kidz in the Hall when I saw them with Dizzie Rascal, Busdriver, and El-P. But I really should have. These Kidz bring back an old school 90’s hip hop style… and it works. I must admit though, I haven’t listened to the entire album yet… but from what I heard at the concert and the one song that was I able to cop, which I can’t stop listening to, Drivin Down the Block… these boyz got it and all they need is a strong fan base and they’re good. They’re set. Drivin Down the Block samples Masta Ace’s “Born to Roll” as their hook and interprets Outkast’s “Elevators (Me&You).” While Naledge and Double-O increase the size of their roll-o-dex - throwin down a song for homeboy Obama’s “Change” mixtape, which includes fellow Chi-town natives The Cool Kids along with many others - you should run out to your local iTunes store and cop yourself either their newest album The In Crowd or their first album School Was My Hustle … or both!

Naledge and Double-O both hail from the windy city, Chi-Town. After relocating to the University of Pennsylvania to get an edumacation they met and created the Kidz in the Hall. Not only are their beatz throw back but they’re reviving the 90’s record label Rawkus Records.

Summer’s comin up and the temps are rising so to get in the spirit, I best see/hear you drivin down the block with you Kidz in the Hall bass crazy kickin it….
