Love dem Philly Cops

phillycops.jpg

Law enforcement, Cops, Popo, The five-o, The Fuzz, call them what you want, but here in the illadelph they don’t have the best rep.

Monday night, in Huntington Park, 3 African American men were pulled over under the belief that they were connected to a shooting that had occurred blocks away. Supposedly it takes 12 or more cops to take 3 men into custody. Did we mention that, in the end, no weapons were found on the suspects or in their car? O we didn’t? After beating, punching, and hitting these men with their batons, the three suspects were taken into custody and charged with attempted murder.

The most suspicious part about this incident is the timing. Let me set the scene: picture 12 or more cops who have been sent out on a blood fueled man hunt for a suspect on the lamb after killing one of their men. If that doesn’t conjure up images of raging bulls and red flags, I don’t know what would. We don’t take cop killings lightly here. $150,000 reward money and billboards with the suspects face plastered on them screams we mean business. That’s why it doesn’t look good when one or two days later, 3 African American men are brutally beaten. By an army of cops. Just a thought.

Now we’re really confused. We’re stuck in a good cop bad cop sitch. On one hand, Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, the cop killed over the weekend, is being buried today after a funeral that will unite the masses - as I said, we really don’t mess around with cop killings. On the other hand, it’s difficult to push aside the image of 12 cops beating up 3 African American men… especially when its video taped and broad casted on the local news. Which brings us to our next point.

Good ol’ Al Sharpton, not one to keep his opinions to himself, has chimed in calling this worse than Rodney King, the LA taxi driver who was stopped in 1991 after being chased for speeding and then brutally beaten, all of which was captured by a witness and then broad casted nationally, sparking racial tension and a drastic increase in anger amongst the black community over police brutality, unemployment, racial tension, and poverty.

The local governing officials are speechless. Nutter, our mayor, can literally only mutter a single word about the situation: “Unacceptable.” His assistant filled in the blanks for Nutter by stating, “Officers are not allowed to operate outside of the law.” Really? Thanks Nutter. In response to a question posed by the metro about the comparison between this incident and the Rodney King incident, local Stephanie Brewington represented the people: “They was both bad. It look like theys was taking out a lot of frustration.”
I don’t know about you all, but I’m pretty sure I was taught that, when something angers or upsets you and you get all full of rage, you punch a pillow or some such inanimate object. Looks like all 12 of those cops missed that day at kindergarten. As the youth of America, I am being disillusioned by the opposing messages being sent out by our cops: If someone is being arrested for trying to harm someone… should you turn around and harm them to teach em a lesson?

Also, how did they miss the fact that there was a helicopter above them videotaping their actions?

Dear cops, get your shit together! Love your city of brotherly love!
