Malibu Gets Knocked, Rocks the Razors

Picture-21.jpg

Our boy, Rob Z, sent this over this morning. We’ve watched it literally twenty times today, and still laugh every time. Click here to view it, or just click the video.

Locked Tight

Chain.jpg

In their “Top Ten Worst Cities for Bike Theft,” Kryptonite crowned a new “winner,” and it’s none other than our fair city of Philadelphia. According to the report, no other city even came close. Looks like the price of gas has driven (pun intended) more consumers to the two-wheeled leg pumper. Or could it just be that the high murder rate has trickled down into petty crime? Or are more hipsters reporting their fixies stolen because they spent wayyyyy too much money on them. Just find an old road bike and do a conversion. So what if it has vertical drops? Are horizontals/chain tension really going to make that much of a difference as your ride between DJ nights?

illside ink

Whilst perusing the world wide web today, I stumbled upon Illside Ink, a multimedia design studio. I’ve been working on a telephone pole stencil for a while now and, as I struggle to figure out how I’m going to spray paint this stencil onto plexiglass, I’ve found hope in the above artists. Just some cool shit I thought I’d share. Check em out here

Love Dem Philly Cops: take 2

mugshot.gif

Once again, Philadelphia cops have found themselves in a sticky situation, and they’re preaching their message loud and clear…. again…

EXCESSIVE FORCE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

We’ve heard that one before. This case came in reaction to the most recent videotaped beating. So this is what went down: Two cops found a 36 year old man writing graffiti… on the wall of a newly married friend…. last August. Naturally, the man ran. Rather than use their words like we learned in kindergarten, the two cops beat the man upon capturing him and then threw him head first into the cop car. After running a background check and finding out that he was clean, they released the man. His friends, who happened to witness the situation, took him to the hospital. With a broken jaw and missing teeth, the man was never charged for anything. This is because the cops (love em!) made up false records to make it look like they were somewhere else … no where near this man. After the highly publicized beating, this man has come forward to prove to the people how messed up our law enforcement truly is.

So, go ahead. Tell the world about the last time you got beat up by the cops. It seems to be the cool thing to do nowadays.

weekend reading

weekend-reading.jpg

Just some random beach reading over the weekend.

Why are we celebrating again?

flag.jpg

It’s time once again for a quick (because its Friday and I’m tryin to get myself to the shore!) reminder as to why so many of us are turning this day into the unofficial start of a four day weekend. Memorial day! It’s a confusing time. Most of us know it as a three day weekend that happens to coincide with one of the best times of year. Others are a little less excited as they remember the loss of a loved one who died in service for our country. So while we’re off partying, roasting those hot dogs and toasting the unofficial start to the summer, let us not forget that we’re not supposed to be so excited. Ahhh Memorial day: picnics, barbecues, family gatherings, sporting events, memories of loved ones, and, oh yeah, I almost forgot: Memorial day is the time when cops nation wide crack down on that click it or ticket law. So watch out.

That said, I’m out, see ya at the beach!

Damion Silver for Mass Appeal Skate Shop

Our homie, and one of our favorite artists, Damion Silver (Flickr page here) recently designed a deck for Connecticut’s Mass Appeal Skate Shop. The deck grinds back to the old days by featuring stacks/rows/lines of your favorite plastic-cased cassette tapes that will surely cause you to capture a bad case of the “nostalgias.” Limited to 60.

The In Crowd: Kidz in the Hall

kith-the-in-crowd-lp-cover-art.jpg

I didn’t really talk about the Kidz in the Hall when I saw them with Dizzie Rascal, Busdriver, and El-P. But I really should have. These Kidz bring back an old school 90’s hip hop style… and it works. I must admit though, I haven’t listened to the entire album yet… but from what I heard at the concert and the one song that was I able to cop, which I can’t stop listening to, Drivin Down the Block… these boyz got it and all they need is a strong fan base and they’re good. They’re set. Drivin Down the Block samples Masta Ace’s “Born to Roll” as their hook and interprets Outkast’s “Elevators (Me&You).” While Naledge and Double-O increase the size of their roll-o-dex – throwin down a song for homeboy Obama’s “Change” mixtape, which includes fellow Chi-town natives The Cool Kids along with many others – you should run out to your local iTunes store and cop yourself either their newest album The In Crowd or their first album School Was My Hustle … or both!

Naledge and Double-O both hail from the windy city, Chi-Town. After relocating to the University of Pennsylvania to get an edumacation they met and created the Kidz in the Hall. Not only are their beatz throw back but they’re reviving the 90’s record label Rawkus Records.

Summer’s comin up and the temps are rising so to get in the spirit, I best see/hear you drivin down the block with you Kidz in the Hall bass crazy kickin it….

Javeleg

javleg.jpg

Look closely at that photo. Go ahead. Really get in there. Figure it out yet? No? Oh ok. Well, that’s just a fucking javelin through somebody’s leg. Not just anybody though, but Standard-Examiner newspaper photographer Ryan McGeeney. McGeeney’s leg received the straight shot while he was on-hand to cover the Utah state high school track championships. Not only did McGeeney get some shots of strapping young lads and lasses prancing on the track and in the field, but managed to somehow put aside the shock, pain, and (i’m sure) discomfort of having a large, long, pointed javelin pierced your leg (right below the knee) like a toothpick through a piece of the tenderest roast beef. My favorite part of the whole story: the student athlete responsible for sending that painful missile of track and field apparatus went on to win the championship on his next throw. “Good thing we brought another javelin,” said Richard Vance, the boy’s coach. Very good thing considering the photographer went to the hospital with part of it still wedged. Thirteen stitches later (no serious injuries whatsoever. it managed to miss everything it could have hit), and he’s a national phenomenon/dude in wrong place at wrong time (or was it all planned?? get at me, conspiracy theorists. i’m into that shit). Read the article here. Photo from the AP. Photo credit: the dude who’s leg it was in.

Thank You and Your Welcome Kanye

kanye.jpg

Lots and lots of drunk, screaming teenagers and young folk dressed in their best neon or glow in the dark attire and crammed into the Tweeter – or whatever we’re calling the Camden stadium nowadays – for the Glow in the Dark Tour. Even from lawn seats far far away, Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D., Rihanna, and Kanye put on a very good show. The line up was so solid that the place was bumpin from the second Lupe went on to the last note that Kanye sung on his pre-planned encore. No doubt, a fun time was had by all…

… Ok. But what really struck me the most and created a lasting impression was Kanye’s behavior. At one point, during one of his hits, he stared into the camera connected to the big screen that was magnifying his face so that no one could miss it. This went on for no less than 10 min. Mr. West has a certain rep – one that you have to admit he lives up to – of being a weeee bit ARROGANT. In addition, he’s known to not be shy about his opinions and say what he feels. Which I respect. He’s pretty famous for his comments – such as “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.” But the icing on the cake came as I fled the stadium like a refugee trying to make it out of the country and onto the jam packed ferry on time. As I dashed for the terminal, I was handed the gem that is Kanye’s book of advise for living your life. Just incase you want to be just like Kanye. While there are some very truthful things inside the pages of this spiral bound book, I couldn’t help but feel like this was his way of justifying his tendencies. Oh, and confirming that the pole is firmly placed up his ass.

Our personal favorite tid bits of this book:

  • Embrace your flaws! ( Warning! Arrogant people are most often too arrogant to realize their arrogance.) So he used to be a buck toothed young bull. He got bullied for it. He got his teeth fixed. He’s now beautiful. “So now, when I see people with messed-up teeth, I want to be that one person who tells them the truth like the kids told me, ‘Your teeth are big and white like a horse!’ I don’t believe in accepting a changeable condition.
  • Believe in your flyness … conquer your shyness

LOVE YOU KANYE… but probably not as much as you love yourself…

You Mad!

Picture-3.jpg

The last line of the last blog entry reminded me of time Cam’ron and Dame Dash were on the O’Reily Factor arguing with the principle of a Philadelphia elementary school about their lyrics negatively impacting (and therefore harmful to) today’s youth. You know it makes for a good time when Cam’ron’s involved. Highlights include:
“Pimpin’ and bitches.”
“That was more of a Marilyn Manson jump-off”
“You mad. You maaaaad. You maaaaaaaaaad.”
“I got the dirt on you doggy.”
“You mad” (8:11 mark in the video, perfect timing)
“How you know how much money I make??”
“You’re done for the night”
What’s probably even more funny though, Killa Cam actually makes some pretty valid points. Watch it here (or click the image).

More Art!

The last few post over the last few days stink up our artsy-fartsy quotient beyond belief. Well, guess what? It’s not over yet! We’ve pinpointed two exhibitions for your types to hobnob your way into the pants of that art school boy/girl on your block. Go on! Impress them!

Untitled-12.jpg
First, Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art has a huge installation called “Life of Mars” which features the work of a ton of artists, and a new untitled, commissioned for the show, installation by one of our favorites, Barry McGee.

Picture-2.jpg
And, a little closer to home, Philadelphia’s Wexler Gallery’s (In)Between features the work of Randall Sellers, Anne Siems, some others, and the much-hyped and whispered about Damien Hirst. Total bummer though, we get the shaft by only have a print of his diamond-covered, $100 million platinum skill. A print? Come on, private collector, let him show it at this not-so-known about Philly exhibit!! We know you paid him cash for. We’re going to get at you in a minute!

More Steve Powers In Belfast

Yesterday, I opened my inbox and found that Steve Powers (ESPO) had sent along another image from his Fullbright Fellowship word in Ireland. To my disappoint, there was a problem with the attachment! After wallowing in sadness and gaining ire at the internet, I checked again today. Success! A new email from Steve which encased not one, but two images! Enjoy! Hope this finds you well!
