Kanye Writes A Book

3106_d8ca0fcd9a35a4d62c2bc60195c63d1c.jpg

Wow. Kanye West wrote a book. Or should we say, J. Sakiya Sandifer wrote a book for Kanye West. According to Kanye’s Blog (yes, he has a blog, and it’s updated quite often. He even likes Bat for Lashes.), the book is “an entertaining volume of ‘Kanye-isms’–the creative, humorous and insightful philosophies and anecdotes used in creating my path to success. It captures the same wit, playful irony, and piercing insight found abundant in my lyrics. In Thank You And You’re Welcome! I deliver my personal message uncensored, without any five second delay or media distortion.” Right Kanye, you deliver the message uncensored. It didn’t go through J. Sakiya Sandifer first, and then through an editor, and then you put your name on it. Even your little description doesn’t sound like the same guy who uttered the phrases: “can’t tell me nothing” and “act more stupidly” or any other atrocity of the English language that you call your lyrics.

Elm Street

Picture 16.jpg

The Elm Company website just receive a fresh and exciting new update. It now houses the fall/winter 07/08 collection and their holiday 08 line. The photography is also pretty good, and it’s easy to navigate–something that gets forgotten about in the high-tech futuristic world that we live in. Today’s world is far from the utopia we all thought the 2000s would be way back in the late 80s. The Elmers (as we like to call them) have always been big supporters of [ 2 one 5 ], so, naturally, you should support them. And, on a slight side note: we put the Elm Company up against Estate LA in the Cage Match feature of this year’s Living Proof Magazine. Go download it here. Who do you think we should crown the winner?

Required Reading

franky.jpg

The newest Frank landed on boutique/retail counters recently. You should probably go try to find one and read it. It’s got some nice metallic accents on the cover that Sir Scansalot (our scanner) couldn’t find the proper reflective table to provide adequate justice. You’ve failed us and your country, Sir Scansalot. You’ve ired the King and the Royal Court. Instead of armor, you’re now draped in the rags of shame worn by the woeful and uninspired peasant class. Live twixt their shabby walls. Hang your head at the playful jestering of their filthy children. Lap the remaining soggy morsels or porridge from their soiled bowls. Relinquish your once powerful and mighty sword, and prepare to swing from the coarse rope of the rickety and unforgiving gallows!

Speaking of Throw Up….

This sounds absolutely awful on numerous levels: A perfume based on Andy Warhol and the Factory.

andysilver11.jpg

“We conceived of Silver Factory as a smooth, smoky, spicy blend of interlacing incense (a key scent of the 60s), wood resin, and syrupy, seductive amber. But just to complicate things, we gave it a heart of jasmine, iris, and violet-a scent that Warhol was especially fond of. These slightly dissonant florals combine to evoke a metallic effect-that of warmed-up, molten silver, and then, for the merest hint of coolness, we threw in a handful of cedarwood.”

Throwing Up Vinyl

Ipecac_1.jpg
Ipecac Recordings hooked up with toy brand UNKL and together they decided to puke up (or release, whichever you prefer) some vinyl toys. Each month for the entire year of 2008, UNKL will vomit out one UniPro toy based on a band on the Ipecac roster. Supplies are limited to 500, so get them before they’re done hurling. I’m going to stop making puke references now because it’s still early for a Monday and I’m trying to eat some Sun Chips. Here’s the line up of spew:
January: Ipecac Recordings
February: Tomahawk
March: Isis
April: The Melvins
May: Northern State
June: Goon Moon
July: QUI
August: Desert Sessions
September: Fantômas
October: Unsane
November: Dälek
December: Peeping Tom
Also, Pitchfork has pictures of the full line up in drawing form.

The Eagles beat Minnesota by a touchdown. We repeat: They beat Minnesota (one of the worst teams in the league) by a touchdown. Hold your excitement for a bit, that doesn’t really say much, but at least they didn’t regress at all, and actually took a few steps forward. First, they figured out that once you get into the red zone, the field gets really small and passing gets harder, so they ran the ball and Westbrook ran for two touchdowns from it (a shovel pass should not count as a pass). Next, McNabb looked a little better than he has–not as tentative, but then again Minnesota has the worst passing defense in the league, and it seems like the receivers finally stepped up a bit and decided to make some plays themselves (how about those amazing catches by Curtis and Brown near the sidelines?). Finally, the play calling wasn’t tiredly predictable–something that’s been happening all season. People know what the fuck they’re going to do which lead to so many early offensive woes. But, this game, they did things a bit differently and by-God it worked. Hopefully this was only a small sign of things to come. The schedule gets mad tough in the next few weeks though.

All Gradiented Up

slicker_fade.jpg

Well, some new tees and designs went to the screen printer the other day, and we stopped by to see how things were going and grab this little sneak peek for you. Expect them either later this week or early next week. Once again, there’s a gradient design, but it’s lacking some of the purple that we’ve been way into lately (see the latest accents to this blog). Also, there’s no gray, one of our other new favorite colors. Look out for a combo of them shortly on a [ 2 one 5 ] shirt too.

American Gangster

american_gangster.jpg
If you want see Training Day 2 or Gladiator Returns don’t even think about seeing this movie. American Gangster is a slow building story with a twist for those who don’t know the story of Frank Lucas. Denzel plays the part of a methodical yet explosive drug lord to a T, but on the contrary Russell Crow’s fake Jersey accent is ok at best as he is left in the dusk by Denzel. I would say the movie is an 8. It has lots good parts but that’s all. There is no tragic death or explosive ending and if you wanted the ending from Man on Fire look somewhere else.

Yo’ Mama

Word on the streets is that Philly has been breeding ground for the nation’s ugliest and rudest people. According to Travel & Leisure magazine we have been listed as the least attractive, stylish, friendly, active, and worldly humans in the US of A… I’m going to have to write a letter.

Dear T & L,

Up yours! How’s that for kind? How dare you! I mean, have you walked around Philadelphia, there are some hot chicks, and hot hot men. What did you do? Confuse us with the people of…ohh i don’t know…Florida? As for culture….Are you serious? Have you walked around all of Philly? We’re no New York, but we totally have our own melting pot….With a lil more than 1.5 million people how can you even utter the idea that we are not cultured? ….. Stylish? Ok, so maybe we’re not as fancy as we should be, but we hold our ground. We stand out, we’re unique, and quite frankly don’t care what you think about our jazzy fashionistas. Active? hmmm ok, I get that, but you can’t be home to the cheesesteak and not have one everyday. pshh

As far as rude…. With people like you callin’ us ugly, and out of state drivers, and corrupted politicians not takin’ care of our schools, playgrounds, and social areas, and clubs that close at 2am…. how can you not expect us to be a lil’ hot and bothered?

Take a good walk around Philly. We are beautiful.

Yours Truly,
Hot Stuff

PSU v. OSU

1483611.jpeg

ESPN’s College Game Day will be broadcasting from Happy Valley this weekend as the Nittany Lions get ready to take on the undefeated Buckeyes this Saturday evening at 8 pm.  Luckily for Penn State ( a team that has an amazing at home record), Ohio State has always had a tough time at Beaver Stadium…

PSU students are already calling for a white out at this Saturday’s game against one of their biggest rivals and have been camping out in Paternoville outside the stadium since Tuesday

reason # 1078 why we love JoePa:  Last night JoePa visited Paternoville to hang out with students and ordered them all pizza!

We Quit

That’s it. We’re giving ourselves pink slips today. It’s high time we pack it in here at [ 2 one 5 ]. Frankly, we don’t want to be in the apparel business anymore. We quit.

“But, [ 2 one 5 ], I love your shit, your steez, and you. Why stop? What could have possibly have brought on the pack-it-in attitude? You were always rambunctious go-getters with a can-do motivation that drowned all naysayers in a wake of quality and exceptional design? What the fuck happened?”

That’s probably what you’re asking right now. So, here’s the answer:
Picture 14.jpg
Meet Phenomenon, the high-end sister brand of Swagger. If this shit is considered “cool” (both clothing and photography wise), then we want out of the game. Seriously. All the Japanese shit trickles into the American streetwear scene eventually, and if this is headed our way, we’d rather hang everything up and find a new outlet where we can dance amongst the wild animals of some magical land, and not have to worry about people wearing clothes that look like something I threw up the last time I drank way too much alcohol after eating some bad cart food.

5 Pointz

415166068_d2cb81136c.jpg

Buried deep within the endlessness of New York City is a glowing beacon of creativity called 5 Pointz, the Institute of Higher Burnin’. This haven for graffiti artist was set-up for writers from all over to put up their work in a place made for graffiti artist by graffiti artist. The building itself is own by New York writer Meres.  If your interested in thrown up your work, 5 Points is located at Jackson Avenue at Crane Street and Davis Street, Long Island City, NY as well as the free permits needed to write at 5 Pointz.

The Red Bull Art of Can exhibit opened last Friday at Fuel Gallery on 3rd and Arch. The exhibit showcases artwork made entirely from Red Bull cans. Submissions were accepted from across the United States, and ranged from sculptures, to clothing, to wall hangings. The exhibit will be in town until Nov. 2nd before moving on to Chicago. Definitely not one to be missed!

SHRED CO.

9010-DUDE.jpg

Looks like the total shred fest has begun huh? Well these flix came over the wire this morning via 9010. The dougs out in eagle VAIL are keeping it gangsta with they little jib action street style. Cant wait til we get some snow out here, it may be awhile though considering its still 80 degrees.

PRAY FOR SNOW FOR THE ILLADELPH.

Is it Snowing Yet?

If the recent early snowfalls in Colorado didn’t quite tickle you in the right way (not “bad tickling,” but like fun playful tickling from a significant other. you know, in those early parts of a relationship before everything becomes way boring and tickling takes a backseat to doing Sudoku’s on separate ends of the couch while heroes or some shit’s on the tv) then maybe this video from yesterday at Snowbird in Utah will increase the finger motion. Hopefully, this season lives up to the early hype, and hopefully, the [ 2 one 5 ] Snowboards will finally get here.

Rave Down

1436404.jpg

Pitchfork reports that Swervedriver will be getting together to tour the world early next year. The lads from Britain haven’t really done anything together for almost ten years, and they’re one of my favs, so that’s provided some Monday morning excitement. No dates have been confirmed, but the plans are in the works. So, at this point, who knows if it’ll happen. In the meantime though, Adam Franklin has been on tour promoting his solo album. Also, no word on whether the tour will lead to a new album.

That Dog Called Hope

What’s been with the New York love today? Are we slipping? Somebody knock us back into Philly mode, fast.

Anyway, city pride aside, the Wooster Collective is curating a show this Friday October 19th in NYC. Here’s the flyer and info:

No Doubts?

281x211.jpg
Here’s some interesting news: Dame Dash released a tribute to his one time partner Jay-Z in the form of Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. Apparently, the album was put together a few years ago and features some of the old Roc-a-fella roster reinterpreting some Jay-Z tracks. I was under the impression it was going to be all Reasonable Doubt tracks, but it’s not. Go figure. There’s quite a catch though if you want to listen for free, you have to sign up for Dame Dash’s social networking site (“what the fuck?” is right): BlockSavvy. However, there was no need to confirm your email address, so go ahead and type whatever you want in there. We’re listening to it right now, and so far it’s kind of what we expected: not very good. I pegged about 80% of this to be bad, and it’s on track right now.

Here’s the tracklist:
01 Juelz Santana: “You Must Love Me”
02 Rell: “All I Need”
03 Nicole Wray: “Regrets”
04 Kanye West: “A Million and One Questions”
05 Denim: “Renegade”
06 Young Gunz: “Face Off”
07 Oschino and Sparks: “Streets Is Talking”
08 Freeway: “Politics as Usual”
09 Memphis Bleek: “Can I Live”
10 Jay-Z [ft. Oschino and Sparks]: “For the…”

***UPDATE*** We hit the nail right on the head: there’s only about 2 songs on here worth the listen.

Get Some

So, the mad limited copies of Living Proof have been flying out of stores. Seriously. It’s only been about a week and we’ve had to restock the majority of our Philly retailers. So, hurry up. We’re running out. Or give us some money so we can get more printed.
There’s a few places that have got a little something special going on, too. They’re some of our favorite spots and run by good people, and you should support them.

Picture 31.jpg Cue Records - Place an order from Cue’s webstore, and when they ship it out, they’ll snuggle a copy of Living Proof in between your vinyl treats.

l_17723af9f98daebaf5d39da14af436c5.jpg WTHN - Buy some stuff at WTHN, and inside your bag, you’ll also find a copy of Living Proof so when you get home, lace up your sneakers, and don some new clothes, you can sit down for a minute and read.

If pounding the pavement trying to hunt down a copy ain’t really your thing, there’s always the internet. Download a pdf of the whole magazine at livingproofmag.com.

Has Money Ruined Art?

money071015_1_560.jpg

Here’s an interesting (albeit long) read from New York Magazine. Author Jerry Saltz explores the effect that money’s playing in the NY art scene. Read it during lunch. Or when you should be working. It may only be Thursday, but I’m sure some of you have already mentally checked out for the weekend. Read a brief excerpt from the beginning. Link to rest of the article follows:

“I love art and the art world, but lately, I can see why the Gavin Brown gallery has a new Website called NewYorkIsDead.biz. The site’s creators say that “nothing’s moribund; energy still abounds. But its timbre is strange.” Just how strange can be seen, as never before, when the bullshit machine runs at full steam; students charge $25,000 for paintings; the M.F.A. (as Daniel Pink notes) is the new M.B.A.; and “the system,” as David Hammons observed, “is making people offers they can’t refuse when it should be making them offers they can’t understand.”

A large chunk of the art world seems to have drunk the Kool-Aid, too. Megacollectors suppose they can enter art history by spending astronomical amounts. They’re P.T. Barnums, showmen and -women who have become part of the show. Art magazines, once left on coffee tables, are fat enough to be coffee tables. Ten years ago this month, Artforum had 124 pages. This month, it has more than that many pages of ads, and 412 pages overall. Damien Hirst, who once brazenly declared that collectors would “buy what you fucking give them,” recently, and wearily, told The Guardian, “You just make things and you sell them, you make things and sell them.” Addressing the strangeness, the underrated painter Jason Fox recently observed, “In these conservative times, it’s easy for art to become hollowed out from any progressive or radical energy and exist only as a bourgeois decoration.” Read the rest of the article….
