Sharply Dressed

ik_tuxedo_dunk_001.jpg
Freshness Mag just posted this little nugget of weirdness sculpted in the form of an outrageous sneaker. Truth be told, I kind of like it. Mostly, I like how they made a Dunk not look like a Dunk in numerous ways. Just another way that Nike continues to freshen the palette. Read what Freshness had to say:

In the upcoming days, NikeStore.com will be launching a section to the Members Only Store called the ‘Innovation Kitchen’, named after the the special group at Nike’s Campus devoted to innovation in products and development. The digital iK will sell exclusive products coming directly from the group in Beaverton, OR. The first product will be this premium Dunk Low in patent Leather with lasered details. The official name is the Tuxedo Dunk which is inspired by patent leather shoes usually worn by grooms. The interior features premium leather lining and insole. There will be very limited numbers available, only sizes 4-14, in whole sizes and a portion of every purchase goes toward research and development in Nike’s Innovation Kitchen. The price is $125.

Beef with…

beef.jpg

Live Earth - A bunch on all day concerts, at least one on each continent (including Antarctica), each one probably costing a ton of money, and for what? To raise awareness about global warming. This falls into the same vein as Live 8 which followed the same plan, gave out gift bags worth several thousand dollars to the performers and tried to raise awareness. Perhaps, just perhaps, the money that went to putting on Live Earch could have gone to something more worthwhile? Maybe like a charity, or, like, science in the form of a grant that could actually help the cause rather than just providing an outlet for Al Gore to toot his own horn again by delivering basically a PowerPoint presentation. Maybe he thought that giant attention grabbing “movie” wasn’t enough. But, if contributing to a cause means melting away money worse than the ice caps, then i must be more charitable, globally aware, and an all around better person than i thought i was.

Let’s Dance

233.jpg

Thanks to labels like Ed Banger, near daily highly-rated albums by Pitchfork, Americans uttering the phrase “italo disco,” Kayne West sort of going back to his Chicago house roots, and the club night ruling the live music event worse than ever, electronic dance music has come on pretty strong in the last few months. Now, first and foremost, I’m calling “novelty” on the majority of this (see Justice’s D.A.N.C.E.). I have a feeling this little surge of flailing arms and legs among skinny white kids will suffer the same crushing ridicule that brutally defeated electro-clash a few years back. But, I digress, some of it slowly moves into guilty pleasure territory like Sally Shapiro, and I’ve always sort of liked Daft Punk. Sometimes synthesizers shoot little lasers into my heart. But, frankly, this new breed reeks of the unworthiness and trying too hard that usually rots the core. Something about it, not so much the bands/groups/DJ’s/producers but the people that are becoming fans, spells fake followers worse than the burgeoning streetwear culture that’s loving the Ed Banger stuff. Also, for those of you that are really into this shit, keep one thing in mind: the majority of you cannot dance.

PS - Buy yourself a Daft Punk helmet. For only $65,000 plus permission from the group. Thanks to Tokion
PS - Ed Banger artist Uffie once called out the Hollertronix messageboard in a song after I believe she posted a few of her tracks on there. Yeah. I can’t find the link, but anybody who has it, let us know. ***Edit: Here’s the song.

Six Pack

1.) Sally Shapiro - Disco Romance — So a Swedish producer hooked up with a winsome Swedish female vocalist to resurrect Italian Disco. Yeah. Call it a guilty pleasure, but I like it. (Watch as I totally contradict myself later with a blog entry about the latest trend of “dance” music.)
2.) Lou Reed - Transformer — I kind of got obsessed with this album again. Mostly because I heard the song Andy’s Chest somewhere and it’s been on heavy rotation since.
3.) Warsaw - Warsaw — Joy Division before they were Joy Division. No Love Lost is probably one of my favorite songs.
4.) Brian Eno - Another Green World — This album sort of divides Eno’s solo career. On one hand, it’s the off-center pop gems of his early work and on the other it’s his weird “ambient” stuff in skeletal form.
5.) Mazzy Star - She Hangs Brightly — Early nineties goodness at it’s finest. You can’t beat Hope Sandoval’s vocals. Ever. I will forever have a crush on this girl just because of her voice.
6.) Blur - Parklife — This album is so distinctly british it’s no even funny. From the ascents to the slang. It’s like drinking Britain through a straw.

Go Phillies!

Picture 2.jpg

So, apparently, the Phillies can do more than play inconsistent baseball. High in the Rocky Mountains, as a storm was brewing, the Phillies burst out of the dugout after the game was put into a rain delay to help the struggling Rockies ground crew get the tarp down on the field. Nearly the entire Phillies roster was out there helping and smiling the whole time. How many Rockies players were out there? 1. Stay classy, Philadelphia. (Go fuck yourself, Denver). Watch the video here.

Welcome back.

We were all on a little vacation for the past week. Sorry if you missed our witty commentary and banter. We’re back now. Take a look at our little break/holiday through the eyes of a fish.
