ubiq

Picture 1.jpg

Philly’s Ubiq just reopened their Walnut St. location over the weekend. They apparently re-merchandised and added a Vans Concept Shop and Gallery on the second floor. I haven’t been yet, but it’s supposedly pretty killer. They’ve got some new clothing in as well including Stussy stuff. I guess the original experiment of going more women’s failed a tad. They’ve always had a decent sneaker selection and I’m excited that they have more Vans because, recently, I think Vans has been slaying the sneaker game. They’ve been keeping it pretty simple with nothing too outlandish. Frankly, I’m tired of a million materials, a million colors, and some whack ass print on my sneakers. I guess I’m started to like things simple again.

Book Worms

Here’s a couple of book recommendations for you. Each are awesome in their own respect and help to document the rise of indie music over the last thirty years

Femal Singers

I’ve been listening to a lot of solo females or bands with female singers all day. Then I got a free Bjork poster while at lunch. Now, I’m compiling a short list of my favorite female vocalists for all of you. In no particular order.

1.) Rachel Goswell (Slowdive/Mojave 3) - Dreamy, light, and powerful, Rachel’s the reason I really like Slowdive. She also has a strong presence on my 3 favorite Mojave 3 records. She hasn’t been able to tour with Mojave 3 recently because she has vertigo or something. Bummer.
2.) Nico - It’s pretty cool to have a weird, Nordic, sultry voice. It’s stupid to take heroin and get pregnant. But man, was Nico awesome.
3.) Bjork - The epitome of total awkward weirdness, there’s something so right about what Bjork does that it’s too good to hate on her paparazzi attacks or freakish outfits.
4.) P.J. Harvey - It was kind of weird for me to be into Polly Jean at the age of fourteen, you know, being a dude and all, but she can write a song and she can sing her ass off. This is an unpopular opinion, but she got better as she got older.
5.) Hope Sandoval (Opal/Mazzy Star) - It’s nearly impossible not to get a crush on Hope just by listening to her voice. It comes out like honey.
6.) Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) - I can’t understand half the words she says, but she’s got the perfect moody, emotion driven voice.

Klippers

The klip//collective took a giant projector, a cube truck, a 5500W generator, and a laptop around the great city of Philadelphia and did this. What have you been up to recently? That’s right. Nothing this fun/cool.

It’s been beautiful here in the Illadelph the last couple of days, so we decided to take the Lomo Colorsplash out during a lunch break. Then we thought, how can we kind of put a damper on the beautiful day, and we shot everyone in yellow, the color of pee. Enjoy!

Money

Strictly Fitteds recently posted up this little nugget. There’s no word yet on a release, but the caps will come in both green and Black and white, and apparently a rainbow one, but there’s picture yet of that. See and read more here.

L7 x Paris

014.jpgparis-hilton-upskirt-02.jpg

In their wrap-up of Coachella, Pitchfork does a little rundown of CSS’s set which included their cover of L7’s “Pretend We’re Dead.” Now, that’s all fine and dandy, but they also report that Paris Hilton was there dancing next to the stage. Yes, Paris Hilton danced to an L7 song. How’s that for mindblowing. Granted CSS has a song called “Meeting Paris Hilton,” but I sincerely doubt Paris knows who L7 is or what they stood for. She’d probably think it was “totally gross.” Perhaps she’ll learn a little more when SHE GOES TO JAIL. Also, yes, you can see up Paris’s skirt in this picture. Check out high-res shots here.
Sincerely,

Jarvis Cocker

51VROUX6FFL._SS500_.jpg

It’s Dan again. This time I’m writing a musical recommendation that doesn’t have to do with the Jesus and Mary Chain. So, hold back your mouth covers, gasps, spit takes, and various other human actions that show “surprise.”

A while ago, Jarvis Cocker, former frontman of legendary Brit-poppers Pulp, released a single entitled “Still Running the World” in which the chorus repeats the phrase “Cunts are still running the world.” Yeah. If you’ve been a fan of Jarvis for a while, this is kind of expected, but to bestow that title to the lead-off single of your solo career makes a pretty bold statement. But that’s the Jarv attitude (or Jarvitude if you will). Cocky. Cheeky. Condescending. Crude. Rude. etc. And, as expected, it shows on this album. And, it comes off so well that you don’t make a second note of it. It’s actually kind of charming and honest which is rare in music today. So, go buy the album.

Two more Jarvis notes:

1.) He’s curating this year’s Meltdown Festival. Look at the line-up here. Motorhead? Seriously? (and yes, the Jesus and Mary Chain are also a part of it. I guess I couldn’t resist.

2.) The video for Cunts are Still Running the World is equally as great as the song. And while you’re YouTubing it, watch the video for his latest single and peep Jarvis and Ali G doing Help the Aged. Also, watch his live performance of one of my favorite Lou Reed songs, Satellite of Love.

Jesus x Scarlett

scarlett-johansson-coachella-08.jpg
Hi, my name is Dan, and I write about the Jesus and Mary Chain a lot. You might call it an infatuation, you might call me fanatical, but don’t call me at Coachella because I’m wasn’t there. Nor will I ever go to Coachella because I don’t want to spend a few days in the desert with temperatures above 100 to sit through a bunch of pretty crappy bands to see about 5 that I like. Anyway, I kind of take it back because I wanted to go this year. And yes, it’s because of the Jesus and Mary Chain. Not only them, but the fact that Scarlett Johansson was there on stage with them. Now, why she was chosen to sing back up for one song, I can offer a guess, but it’s kind of a stupid reason to have a girl sing back up for a song that was played in a movie she was in. Basically, she has to sing one word (”honey”) and it doesn’t really sound like she can, but who knows’ it’s a YouTube video. Watch it here.
