Philly Just Can’t Win

Picture 1.jpg

I’m not a hockey fan by any means. I just never really got into it. The Broad St. Bullies were before my time, and I vaguely followed the Legion of Doom of the early nineties. One summer, I played a lot of roller hockey, and I always excelled in gym class floor hockey. As far as a professional level is concerned, it’s just never been my bag. I’m still disappointed though. After an atrocity they like to call a season, the Flyers added to their woes by failing to win even the draft lottery. They were the worst team in the league but still came in second. It’s kind of like that playground insult: “You’re such a loser that when you entered the biggest loser contest, you came in second (oooohhhhh).” Anyway, it doesn’t matter if the Flyers land a good player or not, because I won’t be watching or even really paying attention. Unless, of course, they’re in the Stanley Cup. Then I might “catch the fever” (i.e. jump on the winning bandwagon).

No Beer at the Ballpark

No beer at Citizen’s Bank Park this year folks, they lost the opener.

Jokes aside, the Phillies lost their home opener to the Braves in extra innings on Monday. Then, last night they lost again in extra innings after a superb pitching performance by phenom Cole Hamels. The dark spot on the Phillies this year is, in fact, like they said in spring training, their bullpen. I had high hopes this seasons, as I’m sure other fans did, as well as players, coaches, and everyone else. Loses are a lot more heartbreaking after you blow a lead. If these two games are any tell-tale sign of how the season’s going to go, I’ll just cover my eyes right now.

I still have hope.

Recent Obsessiions

Batman - When this cinematic masterpiece debuted in 1989, i was only a young buck, but i fell in love instantly. Equal parts explosive action and comedic relief, this film kind of established Tim Burton as a legitimate director. His little quirky style pops up every now and again, but for the most part, he created this incredibly believable dark world that fits the elements this film spewed across. The true treasure of this movie lies in Jack Nicholson’s well-played Joker. His one liners and overall aura birthed a memorable villain that brought a comic book drawing to life. Not to mention, he made a pretty penny out of it too. I’m just glad they didn’t use Robin Williams.

Swervedriver - Not many people have heard of Swervedriver, but they’re probably one of my favorites. Tightly fitting into the shoegaze era of early nineties UK, these Brits added a dreamy fog to buzzing guitars and pop sensibilities. This music is perfect for taking drugs and then doing something where you’re in constant movement, like driving a car, riding on a train, or motorcycling.  However, I don’t condone any of these activities, but there was one time where I decided it would be fun to walk home (30 blocks) after smoking opium. I took Swervedriver with me and it was possibly the best walk I’ve ever had in my life.

Traffic is in The Mag!

traffic-dex.jpg

Traffic is holding it down very major right now! Rick has 2 ads and a 10 page article in the new Skateboard Mag. There are some of the new graphics in the same issue. Bobby, Rich and Jack all have photos in other mags as well! Check it out on trafficskateboard.com. I wish they would have ran some different graphics but Rick wanted to show a series with all 3 pros represented. File this under good shit!
