Philly is finally getting some A-List star treatment outside of a Rocky VI premier (I refuse to call it Rocky Balboa, and is Sly still an A-lister?). To go along with the 25th anniversary of the AF1, Nike is releasing a Philly pack. See more detailed and bigger pictures at Sneakers.

The junior varsity of social networking sites, Facebook, recently probably dropped a ton of cash to have David Choe paint their corporate offices (this is so ripe for a joke about how they should use the cash to fix something with their site, but I don’t use Facebook so I don’t even know what the problems are with it). These tech geeks probably don’t even know who David Choe is, but they’re probably super stoked that their office is like some secret level in their favorite dork computer game or something. They’re also probably role-playing as I write this, and Melkar, the level 12 neo-wizard is totally casting a charm spell on the only girl that works in the office (he likes to call her Princess Ahdamilia). Anyway, none of this is a knock to Mr. Choe because based on these pictures, the shit he did was fucking amazing.

I’m a nerdy little bookworm. Sometimes. Ok, it’s more often than not. You see, I ride the train a lot, and sometimes iPod earbuds make my ears hurt. So, naturally, I nuzzle into the stained seat like a puppy, pull out a book, and start reading. I’ve slowed down my pace, but, at one point, I was reading at least two 200 page books a week. Let’s just say, the librarians got to know me pretty well. So, a question I get asked quite often, and which really annoys me, is: what’s your favorite book? I tell them I don’t have a favorite book. Then, these questioners like to ask me what I think the best book of all time is. Well, I’m here now to give you my answer. There are two of them: Ulysses by James Joyce and Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Forget the Da Vinci Code and all the other trash fiction out there. Each of this books has so much substance that you literally have to look at every word, even “the” to get just the idea behind a phrase, not even the sentence. These two books are so heavy and rich that I’ve read each 3 times and still feel I don’t have a full understanding of either. I’ve wanted to shoot myself at least once every time I read them, but that’s kind of their charm.

In case you missed it, Charlie Manuel, manager of the 3-10 Phillies, tried to fight Howard Eskin. It’s good someone had the balls to keep pushing Manuel’s buttons, and it’s good somebody finally threatened to kick Eskin’s ass. Both are long overdue. Watch the whole “fight” pan out here. Thanks YouTube!!!!

This Friday, head over to Johnny Brendas for the record release of the Teeth’s first full-length album. The Teeth made a little bit of noise with their first official release, an EP. With props from the Fader and CMJ, as well as other music publications, the EP served as small taste of what the Teeth are capable of. Some of these songs have been in their live shows, but now they see a proper release on CD and digital format. So head out and pick up a copy at the show. Okay Paddy and Bishop Allen open up.

Tha Dogg Pound have released a new album. I haven’t heard it yet. I’m hoping that it’s as good as all their verse on the Chronic and Doggystyle, but with a title like that, they may have written their own destiny. Chances are, this album falls under the latter.

These sneakers have been popping up on blogs for a few months and there’s been almost no information about them whatsoever. No release date, no artist, no reason, etc. Until recently, there were only pictures. These shoes were kind of a legend, and it looks like they’re going to stay that way. The creator behind the shoes, Dylan Adair, has shed some light on the project that will never see the light of day. Hopefully, somebody picks up this concept now that it’s gotten a lot of attention.
Now for phase two of this blog post, and it’s all about the band behind these sneakers. Since the angst-ridden age of 14, I’ve been a fan of Joy Division. Something about their music really caught my attention, and even to this day, they hold a special place in my heart. They’re also one of the only bands from that dark period of my life that I still listen to quite regularly. I’d even go as far as to say that they’re my favorite band. Now they’re popping up on t-shirts and sneakers, and there’s a movie being made about Ian Curtis. Some of it seems shallow, some of it seems trite. However, these sneakers and the concept behind them seem well-intended now that the designer behind them have let us into his inspiration and idea behind the sneakers. If they were released, I’d probably buy a pair, never wear them, and freeze them in time like the band after Curtis took his own life and the rest of the Manchester lads formed a little band called New Order. Sorry for the nostalgia.

I’m not a hockey fan by any means. I just never really got into it. The Broad St. Bullies were before my time, and I vaguely followed the Legion of Doom of the early nineties. One summer, I played a lot of roller hockey, and I always excelled in gym class floor hockey. As far as a professional level is concerned, it’s just never been my bag. I’m still disappointed though. After an atrocity they like to call a season, the Flyers added to their woes by failing to win even the draft lottery. They were the worst team in the league but still came in second. It’s kind of like that playground insult: “You’re such a loser that when you entered the biggest loser contest, you came in second (oooohhhhh).” Anyway, it doesn’t matter if the Flyers land a good player or not, because I won’t be watching or even really paying attention. Unless, of course, they’re in the Stanley Cup. Then I might “catch the fever” (i.e. jump on the winning bandwagon).

No beer at Citizen’s Bank Park this year folks, they lost the opener.

(queue rimshot)
Jokes aside, the Phillies lost their home opener to the Braves in extra innings on Monday. Then, last night they lost again in extra innings after a superb pitching performance by phenom Cole Hamels. The dark spot on the Phillies this year is, in fact, like they said in spring training, their bullpen. I had high hopes this seasons, as I’m sure other fans did, as well as players, coaches, and everyone else. Loses are a lot more heartbreaking after you blow a lead. If these two games are any tell-tale sign of how the season’s going to go, I’ll just cover my eyes right now.
I still have hope.

Batman – When this cinematic masterpiece debuted in 1989, i was only a young buck, but i fell in love instantly. Equal parts explosive action and comedic relief, this film kind of established Tim Burton as a legitimate director. His little quirky style pops up every now and again, but for the most part, he created this incredibly believable dark world that fits the elements this film spewed across. The true treasure of this movie lies in Jack Nicholson’s well-played Joker. His one liners and overall aura birthed a memorable villain that brought a comic book drawing to life. Not to mention, he made a pretty penny out of it too. I’m just glad they didn’t use Robin Williams.

Swervedriver – Not many people have heard of Swervedriver, but they’re probably one of my favorites. Tightly fitting into the shoegaze era of early nineties UK, these Brits added a dreamy fog to buzzing guitars and pop sensibilities. This music is perfect for taking drugs and then doing something where you’re in constant movement, like driving a car, riding on a train, or motorcycling. However, I don’t condone any of these activities, but there was one time where I decided it would be fun to walk home (30 blocks) after smoking opium. I took Swervedriver with me and it was possibly the best walk I’ve ever had in my life.

Traffic is holding it down very major right now! Rick has 2 ads and a 10 page article in the new Skateboard Mag. There are some of the new graphics in the same issue. Bobby, Rich and Jack all have photos in other mags as well! Check it out on trafficskateboard.com. I wish they would have ran some different graphics but Rick wanted to show a series with all 3 pros represented. File this under good shit!
