Put It in Your Pocket

French electro-pop duo Air have recently released a new effort in their quest to evolve the scene which they helped create. Since the days of Moon Safari, each Air album has crafted a sound that’s derivative of it’s predecessors without falling into the trap of creating the same album twice. While they’ve had their ups and downs as far as their albums go, each one has seemed refreshing, interesting, and all around solid, never getting trampled or lost in a sea of sound.

Pocket Symphony follows the same course that you would expect out of an Air album while also being unexpected. Working with what seems like a scaled back musical soundboard, they’ve create an album that’s quiet, reserved, and moody. While these terms are often associated with an album that’s “boring,” Air have sewn together an interesting mix that travels through the ears with ease. At times, the songs can seem forgettable, but that’s part of it’s charm. Rather than get stuck in your head, Pocket Symphony, swirls around the listener with a mood, leaving a far more lasting impression than a catching hook or melody.
