TOP 5 + Bonus

Top 5 lists are, like, the best things in the world. Here’s a Top 5 list plus a Bonus!

Top 5 Songs Dan Really Likes Right Now:

1. Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks == This song is so ridiculously catchy it’s not even funny. I first caught wind of this Swedish pop hit back in the fall, and now that the album finally saw a proper stateside release a month ago, I’ve been blasting it pretty hard lately. Good springtime music.

2. Ink and Dagger - Philapsychosis == If you’re not down with the sound from this devil town, then you probably never really got into Ink and Dagger. A staple of Philly hardcore, they were just as well know for their antics as well as their music.

3. The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down == A deliciously souther ballad from Bob Dylan’s former band. It’s weird to me that these guys spent a lot of time in Canada, but they have a very southern feel.

4. The Breeders - Divine Hammer == What’s up 1994? Oh, nothing. You know, just blasting out some great pop gems from the cooler-than-you Deal sisters. Yeah, I’m going to bring back the “wet look.” Why aren’t there bands like this anymore? Who knows, everybody is “post” something nowadays. Fuck that man. Fuck that. (The Breeders are better than the Pixies. There. I said it.)
5. My Bloody Valentine - Glider == This song hurts my ears in a good way. It’s pretty prototypical My Bloody Valentine which is definitely not a bad thing. It’s a little stripped and louder, but just the way I like it. I’d like it better if Kevin Shields would come further out of hibernation, grab Belinda, and make a new album.

6. Sonic Youth - 100% == The video for this song is probably up there as an all-time best. Jason Lee skating around with Thurston, Kim, and the rest looking totally cool. The song is drenched with Sonic Youth goodness too.
Side note: There’s a lot of early nineties stuff in here. Maybe I’m feeling a bit nostalgic. Or maybe most new music is beyond terrible. Who knows.

Getting Later’d

Patrick O’Dell used to shoot for skate mags and now he is the photo dude for Vice which recently launched VBS.TV . His video section is way more skate oriented than anything in the mag besides maybe the ads. Content is added pretty often and includes some up close and personal interviews with skate celebs. Check out epic dudes getting later’d.

New SKATE Game

This site has commercials for the upcoming SKATE game featuring some heavy hitters in the game. It also includes a preview of the actual game which looks pretty sick if youre into that sort of thing. Anyone thinking Gonz is slacking is in luck cause dude doesnt even get dressed or leave his hotel to get this footage.

Put It in Your Pocket

French electro-pop duo Air have recently released a new effort in their quest to evolve the scene which they helped create. Since the days of Moon Safari, each Air album has crafted a sound that’s derivative of it’s predecessors without falling into the trap of creating the same album twice. While they’ve had their ups and downs as far as their albums go, each one has seemed refreshing, interesting, and all around solid, never getting trampled or lost in a sea of sound.

Pocket Symphony follows the same course that you would expect out of an Air album while also being unexpected. Working with what seems like a scaled back musical soundboard, they’ve create an album that’s quiet, reserved, and moody. While these terms are often associated with an album that’s “boring,” Air have sewn together an interesting mix that travels through the ears with ease. At times, the songs can seem forgettable, but that’s part of it’s charm. Rather than get stuck in your head, Pocket Symphony, swirls around the listener with a mood, leaving a far more lasting impression than a catching hook or melody.
