US OPEN report

usopen.gif

Vermont snowfalls for the last 72 hours.

Smugglers Notch, 17 inches.

Stow, 15 inches.

Jay Peak , 22 inches.

Stratton Mtn, 3 inches.

Vermont is known for two things- the US Open and maple syrup. Syrup is sweet, but the US Open has been pretty harsh.

The low pressure system that swung through New England was generous to all of Vermont except for Stratton. With the low sitting off Canada and another low moving across PA right now, Vermont is sitting between two spinning gears, with ass-hair-freezing cold air getting sucked down from the Arctic.

The show has gone on, however.  Yesterday’s slopestyle event produced one major upset, as Buaas Oestgaard, of Norway , zapped the seemingly invincible Jamie Anderson. Anderson completed her run with style, but Oestgaard pulled out the 720.

The Mens event wasnt nearly as much as a surprise in that S Dubbs won the thing again, much to the chagrin of every fan over the age of 12.  However, second place went to Tim Humphreys of (get this) Basking Ridge , New Jersey .  This, just a month after Jersey ’s Shane Pospisil took second at Terje’s Arctic Challenge. Unfortunately, this event has been lacking one Travis Rice.

Numbers dont seem to be down, as East Coasters still flock to this historic event. Fighting the harsh wind to pick up some free foam novelty is a time-honored tradition.  Today, competition will continue with the Mens and Women’s Pipe.

Rumors are that tonights Big Air might be cancelled, due to the relentless winds.
