Oh, if only the Phillies would start playing unimaginative baseball. First, they start off the year looking like their in an amateur league. Then suddenly they turn it around and get a little hot, only to have that fire doused by a sub-.500 team. Following that slight skid, they regain their composure and go on to sweep series from both the Mets and the Braves, two division rivals, two of the best teams in baseball. But as always, their latest brush with a “junior varsity” opponent in the Royals has resulted in 17-5 blowout. Now, the individual players are doing little to curb their “imaginative” baseball. Example 1: Ryan Howard. Check out his month of April and May. Yeah. Example 2: The Bullpen. Touted as the team weakness, they pitched a stretch of 20 scoreless innings, only to be shelled the next series they get into. Example 3: Starting Pitching. Cole Hamels is all they have. You probably should fold if you only have one Ace. Example 4: The rest of the team. I gave my glaring examples, but just look at the rest of them, and they’re all playing inconsistent. Jimmy Rollins was hot, now he’s colder than the vegetable crisper. Chase Utley, his defense has been lacking this year and that four strike-out game didn’t help, but he does lead the team in RBI’s. I could go on and on about this, but basically, I wish the Phillies would suck it up, turn it around, and pull their heads out of their asses. Consistent baseball wins championships. It may not be imaginative, but it wins. Bring me a championship, then you can do whatever you want.
